What The Word MeantLuke 2:10

The Bell in the Square

This message is for the word that reached your family as an announcement rung out in a square, and now arrives at your own table sounding like a charge somebody is making

In the town his grandmother came from, news arrived at the fountain.

There was a man whose whole job it was. He had a handbell, a leather satchel, and a particular pitch of voice that carried past the church wall and up into the streets, and when he stood in the middle of that square and rang, everything in that town stopped. Shutters went up. Women came out with wet hands. Children were sent to fetch their fathers from the field.

Then he read what he had been given to read.

His grandmother told Mateo about that man perhaps a hundred times, and she always told it the same way, and the part she always paused on was this. Nobody argued with the bell.

Nobody in that square ever stood up and said well, that depends on your definition. There was no debate, because the man was not offering an opinion. He was reading out something that had already happened somewhere else, and the entire town's business was simply to hear it and go and act accordingly.

Mateo is thirty-eight and lives four hours from that town and has a table of his own.

And two Sundays ago at that table, in the middle of a perfectly good afternoon with the plates going round, somebody said the word.

Not aggressively. Just in passing, the way you would mention where you had been.

And Mateo watched his own table change temperature. He watched his cousin's face do a small thing. He watched his brother in law reach for the water. He watched three people all decide at once, silently and quite kindly, to move the conversation somewhere safer, and somebody asked about the car, and it worked, and the afternoon carried on and was lovely.

But the word had landed on that table like a charge somebody was making.

That is what got him afterwards, washing up. The same word that used to gather a whole square around a fountain had just emptied a table of its ease in under four seconds. And nobody in his family is hostile. They love each other. Nobody did anything wrong at all.

It is simply that in that town, in that square, the word arrived attached to a bell, and at his table it now arrives attached to an argument, and Mateo, who is not a fighter, has begun to leave it out of his own sentences in order to keep the afternoon.

And you know that table, because you have sat at yours and felt the temperature change and reached for the water yourself.

The Bell in the Square

The first time it was ever said, it was said to frightened men outdoors

Let me take something off you before anything else, because you have been carrying it and it was never given to you.

You are not responsible for the temperature of a room. You never were. Scripture hands you an announcement and never once appoints you the keeper of everybody's comfort while it is read out, and it is the Holy Spirit, not your timing at a table, who opens a person to hear. Set that down. You have carried it through three Christmases and it is not yours.

Now hear the first time the word was ever used out loud, because the setting matters enormously.

It was night. It was a hillside outside a small town. The people it was said to were working men who had drawn the shift nobody wants, and they were terrified, and the first thing said to them was do not be afraid, which tells you exactly what state they were in.

And then this.

Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.Luke 2:10

Look at what that sentence is made of.

It is an announcement, delivered to people who had done nothing to earn it, about something that had already occurred a mile away, and the effect it is designed to produce is named right there in the sentence. Great joy. That is the intended result. Not agreement. Not a position. Joy.

That is the bell. That is what the word is, at its origin, before it was ever anybody's argument.

And that announcement is over you. Right now, at your own table, in an ordinary week, with the plates going round. That is written, and His Spirit is the one who keeps it living in you, and He did not attach a debate to it before He handed it over.

Now here is the thing I want you to sit with, because it will loosen something.

An argument asks the room to concede. An announcement asks the room to hear. They feel completely different across a table, and they feel different mostly to the one speaking.

You have been carrying the word into rooms in the posture of a man expecting to be contradicted, because that is what has happened a few times, and a man in that posture makes everybody around him brace whether he says a word or not. Your family are not reacting to the news. They are reacting to the brace. And you cannot see your own brace from inside it, which is why washing up feels the way it does.

You are holding good news. Scripture calls it news for all the people, and the same Spirit who said it on that hillside is the one who carries it in you, and none of that requires anybody at your table to concede a single point.

And I will say the honest half too, because you would want it said. Leaving the word out to protect the afternoon does protect the afternoon. It works. It has worked several times now. What it does not do is protect you, and you are the one still standing at the sink an hour later with your hands in the water.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not a task and it is not a challenge.

There is a word, and it is news, and today you are going to ring it once in a room where nobody can hear you.

That is all. Nobody is sending you back to Sunday lunch with an agenda, and if the word never comes up at that table again this year, you have not failed anything and nothing has been withdrawn from you.

You are carrying great joy for all the people, in that chair, this minute, before your family shift one inch. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one who makes it live, and it does not become truer if anybody agrees or less true if the conversation moves to the car.

I will not tell you what will happen when you say it out loud, or how the next lunch will go. That is God's, and He works in His own way and in His own timing, and I am not going to invent a promise to finish a page well. What I will tell you is what is already yours, and what is already yours is a bell, not a case to argue.

Ring it. Then let the square do what the square does.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing, out loud, the way a man rings a bell in a square that is not yet awake. Nothing here is a task and nothing here has to be earned; it is already yours in Christ, settled on a hillside before anyone at any table had a view about it. Scripture is what these lines stand on, His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and the outcome is His, answered in His own way and in His own timing.

  1. Four seconds at that table, you are not the measure of this and you never were. In the name of Jesus I hand you back to Him at this sink, because the word that changed the temperature means good news, and news is what is being rung out over me.
  2. Brace I carry into my own family's rooms, you are off my shoulders and you are not writing the afternoon any more. Scripture says it is good news of great joy for all the people, and joy is the effect it was sent to have, not a point anybody has to concede.
  3. Lord, You said it first to frightened men on a night shift who had earned nothing, and Your Spirit is the one still ringing it. The word is news and it is mine, and I am saying it out loud in this empty room today.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
