She can feel a room from the second song and she has never been wrong about one.
Anya knows when it is going to open. She knows when it is not, and what to do about that, and when to stop trying. She knows which key that congregation actually sings in as opposed to the one on the sheet. She knows the three seconds after a song ends where you either say something or you do not, and she almost always does not, which is one of the reasons people say she is good at this.
She has been doing it for nine years.
And in June, driving to a Saturday rehearsal, she asked herself when she was last in the room herself, and she got a very clear answer, which was worse than getting no answer at all.
March. A Wednesday. Alone in the car park before a meeting, for about four minutes.
That is the most recent one she can find, and it is three months old, and before that there is a gap she does not want to look at.
She is not burnt out. That is what everybody suggests and it is not it. She sleeps, she likes her life, she has not been crying in cupboards.
What has happened is more specific and more difficult to say out loud. She has spent nine years learning to build the room, and somewhere in the learning she stopped being able to be a person inside it.
She cannot stand there and receive anything, because she is listening. The whole time, at every service, one part of her is watching the back rows and one part is counting bars and one part is deciding whether the third song stays.
That is not a fault. That is the job and she does it well and people are genuinely met in there.
It is only that a woman cannot be a host and a guest at once, and she has been the host every week for nine years.
She said something about it to nobody at all, and drove to the rehearsal, and was excellent.
And you may know this. You may serve the encounter, in whatever form your version takes, and you may not have been in it yourself for months, and everybody around you may be certain that you are the most spiritual person in the building.

What the Father is looking for is a person, not a service
Take this off before we go a step further, because you have been carrying it since June and it was never yours.
You are not a fraud for building rooms you cannot stand in. You never were. Scripture describes what the Father seeks and it is not an event or an atmosphere, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the quality of a room, who brings a person into worship. Set it down here in the car. It is heavy and it has been in the passenger seat since the summer.
Now hear the sentence, and notice what He says the Father is looking for.
Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.John 4:23
They are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
He is not looking for worship. He is looking for worshipers. It is people He is after, and He says so plainly, to a woman by a well who had just tried to move the conversation on to which mountain the right services happen on.
And He gives two markers, and neither of them is skill. In the Spirit, which is His work and not yours. And in truth, which means honestly, as the person you actually are.
You are one of the people He is looking for. Not the room you build. You, on a Tuesday, in a car park, with nothing on. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one who does the bringing in, and He has never once needed you to be running anything at the time.
Now let me be careful, because there is a ditch on this side and I am not putting you in it.
Nothing here says the nine years were wasted or that building rooms is a lesser thing than being in them. Serving is not second class. People have genuinely met God in rooms you built and that is not a consolation prize, it is a real work and Scripture honors it.
And nothing here says the style is the problem. The songs are not the problem. The craft is not the problem, and this is not a message about stepping back or handing anything over, and please do not read it that way.
The point is only that a host and a guest are two different postures, and you have not been a guest anywhere in three months. Scripture asks for the guest, and His Spirit is the one who seats anybody.
Here is the tender part. What is actually stopping you is not busyness.
It is that you no longer know how to be in a room without assessing it. You have trained an ear for nine years and it does not switch off, and the idea of standing somewhere and receiving without listening feels, honestly, like being asked to drive without looking at the road. His word does not ask you for that ear, and His Spirit is patient with it.
So the smallest place to start is not a room at all. It is one sentence, said out loud, with nobody listening, where there is nothing to assess.
Scripture says the Father is seeking worshipers, and His Spirit is the one who makes anybody one, and neither of them ever asked you to organize it.
So here is the turn, and it is small, and it is not a room.
Say one thing you believe out loud, in your own words, using none of the phrases you would use from the front.
That is the whole of it. One sentence. In the car, or the kitchen, or the rehearsal room with nobody in it yet.
And the rule is what makes it work: nothing you would say into a microphone. If a line arrives that you have used to bring a room somewhere, put it down. Those are host sentences, and this one is a guest sentence, and it will be worse and plainer and that is the entire point.
You are one He is seeking, today, with nothing arranged and no room built. His word says the Father is looking for worshipers and not for worship, and His Spirit is the one who brings a person in, and neither of them has ever waited for you to stop listening properly first.
I am not going to tell you what Sunday will feel like or when you will next be in the room. That belongs to God and He does it in His own way and in His own timing, and I will not put a promise in His mouth so a page can end warmly. What I can tell you is what is already yours, and what is already yours is a place at the table rather than only at the pass.
Say the plain sentence. Then go and build Sunday like you always do.
Declare this over yourself
Say these sitting in your own car with the engine off. Nothing here is a task and nothing here has to be earned; it is already yours in Christ, and it was yours through all nine years of building rooms. Scripture is what these lines stand on, His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and the outcome is His, answered in His own way and in His own timing.
- Ear I trained over nine years, you can take a whole room somewhere on a Sunday morning and you are not coming into this car with me. In the name of Jesus I set you down for four minutes, because I have the thing itself and not only the accent.
- Idea that I have to be running something to be present, you have kept me at the pass for three months in a building full of food. Scripture says the Father is seeking worshipers and not worship, and a person is what He is looking for and I am one.
- Lord, You said it to a woman at a well who wanted to talk about which mountain, and Your Spirit is the one who brings anybody in. What I believe is mine underneath the style, and I am saying one plain sentence of it out loud today.
